The Paediatric Unit at The Canberra Hospital is looking for a suitably qualified Registered Nurse with outstanding leadership to fulfil the dynamic position of Clinical Nurse Consultant for our Adolescent Ward.

Eligibility/Other Requirements: Registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Post-graduate qualifications in Paediatric Nursing or extensive nursing experience within a paediatric environment would be desirable.

Responsibility Statement: The Clinical Nurse Consultant – Paediatrics, will be responsible for the operational management, nursing care and patient flow within the designated clinical area, through engagement with internal and external stakeholders.


1. Provide leadership for nursing staff within the designated clinical area in all aspects of clinical practice, professional development, education, research and teaching, creating a quality work environment.

2. Accountability for the flexible allocation of human and financial resources within the designated clinical area to ensure achievement of an agreed level of service and reporting of variances against agreed targets.

3. Provide leadership to and develop nursing staff within the designated clinical area fostering and providing an environment that encourages regular feedback and innovative change to meet the constant demands within the clinical healthcare setting. Ensure performance management agreements are in place.

4. Lead, coordinate and work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate high quality service delivery that meets the strategic objectives of the designated clinical area, the Paediatric Service and the Division of Women, Youth & Children.

5. Participate in the relevant managerial committees and forums throughout the hospital representing the interests of the Paediatric Service and children’s healthcare, and provide feedback within the appropriate forums.

6. Ensure the development, maintenance and review of clinical standards that are aligned with the strategic goals of the Paediatric Service and the Division of Women, Youth & Children and support the provision of a safe, efficient, child and family centered service, based on evidence and best practice.

7. Comply with and deliver against the required Key Performance indicators in respect to Occupational Health and Safety, Workplace Diversity and Industrial Democracy principles and practices and be committed to the values of ACT Health.


1. Demonstrated ability in nursing leadership to achieve a high standard of nursing services for patients within a multidisciplinary Paediatric environment, whilst meeting agreed targets for access and efficiency.

2. Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment with proven negotiation and delegation skills and the ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external service providers to achieve high quality care.

3. Demonstrated ability to facilitate cultural and organisational change creating a culture of participation and open communication.

4. Understanding of financial and human resource management in the delivery of an efficient and effective service that meets its agreed targets.

5. Proven record of behaviour and attitude consistent with professional standards and professional development of self and others.

6. Proven ability in managing systems for clinical governance through the development of clinical practice and quality improvement activities, evidence based policy, education and performance evaluation.

7. Demonstrated ability to consistently display a commitment to, compliance with and leadership in high quality Customer Service, Workplace Diversity, Occupational Health and Safety and Industrial Democracy principles, practices and relevant legislation relating to these areas and an understanding of and commitment to the organisation’s values.
